There are numerous differences between a standard more common inket printer than a photo printer. However the basics are that photo printing requires more additional cartridges, either speciality photo inks for the model or just different variations on the standard colour cartridges.
So why cant I just get an inkjet printer to print off photos for me?

For starters a picture printer is much more quicker at printing this type of format than an inkjet. The thing to remember is that its a specialised piece of equipment designed for the sole purpose of printing out images from other devices, so its always going to be better than something that is more for general work than specific photo processing.
Printers for Photos require alot less maintenance that an inkjet, due to the way they've been designed and by the way they use the ink. the average ink jet printer may require regular checking and maintenance such as cleaning and often at times replacement. Getting the spray nozzles clogged up is also a common problem.
